ICP Optical Emission Spectrometry Principle


ICP is the abbreviation for Inductively Coupled Plasma which is the technique of optical emission spectrometry. The working of the ICP OES principle is quite interesting. The process proceeds as the plasma is offered from outside to an analysis sample and the atoms are excited to return to their lower energy positions.


Then the emission or spectrum rays are released and they correspond to the photon wavelength that can be measured. For generating plasma, first, the argon gas is supplied to the torch coil and then the high-frequency electric coil is applied at the tip of the torch tube. An electromagnetic field is in turn created by the high-frequency current in the torch tube and plasma is generated by the ionization of the argon gas.


Applications of the principle


The ICP-OES principle is an outstanding process for conducting the elemental analysis for a wide range of samples whether the matrix is comprised of a high level of dissolved solids and is complex. The procedure is used for a wide variety of applications including:


  • Determining the quality and safety of drinking water and water used for commercial cause

  • Soil analysis in agriculture for determining the salinity or toxicity of soil composition.

  • Environmental impact assessments for pollution or chemical analysis

  • Food safety in the food and beverage industry

  • Pharmaceutical analysis for analyzing the certain composition of discrete elements in various drugs and vials.

  • Nuclear energy applications in metallurgy, geology, mining, nuclear waste management, nuclear plant monitoring, nuclear fuel analysis, etc.

  • Analysis of petrochemical samples by directly testing the organic solvents. The applications can be evidently spotted in achieving finished products such as bitumen or fuel or in crude oil refineries.
